Booking choice: The Yu Garden tour with tea, from $81 per person. Check dates Tour details
Going alone costs a metro ride of a few yuan and a 30 to 40 RMB ticket, under $7 in all. The garden is 10 minutes on foot from Yuyuan Garden station, and most people see it in one to two hours. Nobody needs a tour to get in.
A tour buys something else: the story behind the rocks and walls, someone to handle the tickets and the Chinese, a plan around the crowds and the Monday closure, and a car for the rest of the city. Below, the real cost of each option, how private pricing works, and a short self-guided route if you go it alone.
The quick answer
Go alone if you have half a day, are happy with signs and a phone translator, and mainly want the views. Book a guide if you want the history and symbolism, have one day for all of Shanghai, are on a layover, or are visiting in Golden Week. The garden-only private tour with tea starts at $81 per person with the ticket included. Private prices are tiered by group size, so a couple or a solo traveller pays more per head than the from-price.

Can you visit Yu Garden without a tour?
Yes, easily. Metro to Yuyuan Garden station, a 10-minute walk, a 30 to 40 RMB ticket at the gate, then one to two hours inside.
The logistics are about as simple as Shanghai gets. Ticket windows at both gates, a WeChat mini-program if you'd rather buy on your phone, no reservation needed. Inside, the paths loop, so you won't stay lost for long. The two traps are timing: Mondays (closed unless it's a public holiday) and last entry at 16:00.
Details are in tickets and hours and getting to Yu Garden. What you miss alone is context. The garden is full of meaning that isn't written on any sign.
What does a Yu Garden tour cost compared with going alone?
Under $7 alone, $67 on the join-in bus, $81 for the private garden tour, $115 for a private full day. Several private tours leave the 30 to 40 RMB ticket to you.
From-prices per person in USD, checked on the listings in October 2026. On the private tours they are the lowest group tier.

Explore the Yu Garden tour with tea Tour detailsWhy does a private tour cost more per person for one or two people?
Private tours here are priced per person on a sliding scale. The from-price is the lowest tier, usually for a larger group; a solo traveller or a couple pays more per head.
The guide and the car cost the operator the same whether one person sits in the back or six. The listing spreads that cost across the group, so the price per person falls as the group grows. The "from $115" on the full day is what each person pays at the cheapest tier. It is not what a couple pays.
Two checks before you book. First, enter your real group size in the date picker and read the price it gives you. Second, read the option. On the full day the option decides what you get: Guide Service Only and the Uber/metro option travel without a private car, Guide & Car adds one, and only All Inclusive adds lunch and the garden ticket. The Shanghai Tower deck is extra on all of them. On the tour with tea, a party of 1 to 4 rides in a Didi (the listing says premium Uber) and 5 or more get a minivan.

What does a guide add at Yu Garden?
The meaning behind what you see, the tickets and the language, and timing around crowds and Mondays.
- History: Pan Yunduan built the garden from 1559 for his father; the Small Swords Society held Dianchun Hall from 1853 to 1855; British troops used Huxinting as a base in 1842. A guide ties the halls to the stories.
- Symbolism: rockeries stand for mountains, pierced rocks are prized for their holes, and moon gates frame one view inside another. China Highlights calls this "view within a view" one of the best reasons to visit with a guide.
- Crowds: a guide knows where the quiet corners are. "[...] the gardens were busy but Yun managed to find quite spots and took our photos", wrote a guest on the tour with tea.
- Language and tickets: windows, the WeChat mini-program, concessions, the Monday swap. Small things, each one easier with someone who reads Chinese.
- The rest of the city: a car to the Jade Buddha Temple, the Bund and the Shanghai Tower afterwards, which is where a full day pays for itself.
Another guest summed it up: "Wing gave us lots of interesting information about the history and culture of the area, but also made the tour feel relaxed and personal."
One guide for the whole city: Yu Garden, the Bund, the Jade Buddha Temple and Nanjing Road in a day, with hotel pickup.
Check dates for the private full dayWhen is a Yu Garden tour worth it, and when is it not?
Worth it on a layover, on a one-day visit to Shanghai, in Golden Week, or if the history matters to you. Not worth it if you have time, like to wander and only want the garden.
Book a guide if:
- You have one day for all of Shanghai and want Yu Garden, the Bund and a temple without working out the metro.
- You are on a layover: airport pickup, timing and a car for your bags matter more than the garden ticket.
- You are travelling in Golden Week or over Chinese New Year, when a plan around the crowds is worth money.
- You travel with older relatives who need the pace adjusted and a car between stops.
Go alone if:
- You have a free morning and like to linger.
- You only want the garden and the bazaar.
- You are on a tight budget: a couple pays well over $160 for a private tour and under 100 RMB alone.
One unhappy bus-tour guest put the case for DIY bluntly: Shanghai is easy enough to plan yourself. For the garden alone, we agree.

Which Yu Garden tour should you pick?
Garden only: the private tour with tea. Half a day: the 4-hour tour. The whole city: the private full day. A layover: the airport tour. Cheapest with a ticket: the join-in bus.
- Private tour with tea: 2 to 2.5 hours, an hour inside with the ticket paid, the old town and Yuyuan Old Street, then tea.
- 4-hour private tour: the old town, an hour in the garden, the Bund and the Shanghai Tower. Entry fees extra.
- Private full day: 7 to 8 hours across old and new Shanghai. Garden ticket only on All Inclusive.
- Airport layover tour: from Pudong, 80 minutes in the garden, up to 8 hours, extra hours charged.
- Join-in bus tour: $67 with the garden ticket (Tuesday to Sunday), Zhujiajiao and lunch, in a shared bus.
All private prices are per person and tiered by group size, and the garden is closed on Mondays on every one of them.

Seven to eight hours with your own guide: Yu Garden and the old town, the Jade Buddha Temple, the Bund and Nanjing Road. All Inclusive adds lunch and the garden ticket.

Give it 90 minutes, arrive at 09:00, and find these seven things in turn. Then step out into the bazaar.
- Sansui Hall, the first big hall, where the garden's formal side begins.
- The Grand Rockery across the pond. Walk round it; the view changes every few steps.
- Wanhua Chamber, a smaller courtyard with old trees.
- Dianchun Hall, where the Small Swords Society set up its base in 1853.
- The dragon walls. Look up as you walk between sections: the walls end in dragon heads.
- The Exquisite Jade Rock (玉玲珑), 3.3 m of porous stone, by Yuhua Hall.
- The Inner Garden, the quietest corner, saved for last.
A phone translator handles the signs that are Chinese only. Go early: the narrow paths fill with groups by mid-morning at weekends.

Is the tip-based walking tour a cheap way to see Yu Garden?
No. It is a good city walk, but it spends about 20 minutes around the City God Temple and never enters the garden. The $5 is a booking fee; the guide is paid in tips.
The Shanghai walking tour works like the free walking tours of European cities. You pay a $5 booking fee when you reserve, the guide earns nothing from that, and at the end you tip what you think it was worth. Guests explain it well. "You are expected to pay for the tour via tip - so remember to bring cash or use phone payment app for tip :)" wrote one. Another hadn't realised: "This was a free walking tour which we didn’t realise as we paid to take part and then paid again at the end. It’s based on tips."
It meets at People's Square station Exit 3, takes up to 30 people and covers about 7 km in 4 hours, by one guest's step count: People's Square, Nanjing Road, the Bund and the City God Temple area. It ends a short walk from the garden. If there is time before the 16:00 last entry, buy a ticket and go in.
Four hours on foot from People's Square to the Bund and the City God Temple. Bring cash or a payment app for the tip.
